The Game UN:Me: A Cerebral Thriller That Blends Silent Hill with Among Us Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive experience where a young woman harboring several personalities inside her must escape from a maze of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four distinct personas, each with their own fears and drives. These souls can seize control spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated phobias upon her suddenly.
Judging by revealed footage, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy hospital, though other scenes depict the protagonist navigating a abandoned chapel.
A World of Personal Horror
"What are you fearful of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Elements that appear minor to others can trigger something primal inside us. This game explores that idea — anxieties that are unique to each person."
The central mechanic involves controlling the persona that emerges at any given time. However, these identities will switch against your will during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's anxieties become amplified and assault the protagonist one after another. As the persona changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Eerie Visuals and a Deadly Choice
At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The setting is populated by orderlies all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the lobby have enormous blooms where their heads should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "Each of the personas claims that the physical form belongs to them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."
Once players have deduced a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, since every entity can lie or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the true [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The final entity remaining could be a fraud. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
