21 mins: Fierce Play while Both Teams Battle
21 mins: The Broncos advance to the midfield and nearly pierce the opposition defense through Walsh and Shibasaki on the left side. Another superb kick from Reynolds on the final play maintains the Broncos' pressure. For three tackles they stay in control, but some quick passes release the rapid Jahrome Hughes, and as he's tackled on the defensive 40m line, a set restart is given for holding down. Melbourne are now in rhythm, and Warbrick breaks through the line, followed by Coates making a sprint – only for Walsh to make high contact with a shoulder! Is that a sin-binning? Not according to the referee, says Grant Atkins, because Coates was buckling. The fullback is placed on report nonetheless, and Melbourne continue their onslaught.
19 mins: Munster Leads Storm Attack
19 mins: Cameron Munster is active as Melbourne move at speed down to their attacking 30m line. On the right side, Hughes lofts a kick, Katoa rushes up, but in the marking contest, the second-rower knocks on, and Brisbane finally get a respite.
18 mins: Storm Apply Force on Brisbane
18 mins: The Storm perform a perfect restart set and apply plenty of force on Mariner with the last tackle kick. Once more, the Broncos struggle to advance the midfield in response, and Reynolds is compelled to boot it deep to keep his team in touch.
17 mins: Setback for Storm
17th minute: There's a setback for Melbourne. Jack Howarth has been replaced due to a groin issue. Tyran Wishart is on in his place.
CONVERTED TRY! Melbourne 12-6 Broncos (Eliesa Katoa, 15)
Spectacular, absolutely stunning. After back-to-back restarts, Brisbane are flagging. On the third play near the try line on the left side, the Storm move the ball infield for two passes before Jahrome Hughes kicks it off the ground and the charging Eliesa Katoa times his charge perfectly to dive on the loose ball and stand to celebrate his team’s second try!
From slightly right of the uprights, Nick Meaney kicks his second conversion.
12 mins: Melbourne Display Thrilling Offense
12th minute: Melbourne look dynamic in attack. There’s speed from the play-the-ball, power from the pack, and sharp passing from the outside players. A dangerous attack concludes with a high kick to the left side that is knocked on by Walsh and leads to a infringement to the Storm for an obstruction on Coates. The Storm reject the penalty goal and set up under the posts. There’s a six again – and another – as Cameron Munster weaves side to side.
10th Minute: Tense Play
10 mins: Stefano Utoikamanu has delivered as promised from the start and his carry from the kickoff allows Harry Grant, then Papenhuyzen, to snipe from dummy-half. Jahrome Hughes kicks from 40m and Reece Walsh secures the bomb on his 10-meter line. Brisbane show less penetration this drive and get lucky on the final play when Hunt’s pass to Reynolds is dropped. Fortunately, the experienced playmaker kicks superbly to turn Coates around and forces the Storm winger to sprint from his in-goal. The Brisbane are too eager with their pursuit, catching the Queenslander with a high tackle, and Melbourne can gain attacking field position.
CONVERTED TRY! Storm 6-6 Broncos (Nick Meaney, 8)
From the scrum, Stefano Utoikamanu drives hard to the 20m line. Then, from fast play from the play-the-ball, every key Storm player get a touch as they catch and pass out to the right hand side until Nick Meaney straightens up, angles in at high speed, and carves through a weak tackle line to dive over for an instant reply!
The centre dusts himself down to add the conversion. It's a tied game!
7th Minute: Both Sides Trade Sets
7 mins: The two teams trade conservative sets around halfway, but then the Broncos look to expand on their left side, only to be unable to hit Shibasaki with the ball. William Warbrick rushes up and earns a knock on for his efforts.
5th Minute: Dream Start for Brisbane
5th minute: This marks the perfect beginning for Brisbane, taking the lead before Melbourne have even touched the ball, in an offensive play dominated by both Haas and Walsh. The Melbourne might feel a little aggrieved at Grant Atkins blowing such an early penalty, but they were soundly opened by the rapid Broncos attack.
CONVERTED TRY! Melbourne 0-6 Brisbane (Mariner, 3)
Following a long kick, the Broncos get to work. Melbourne give away a six-again for offside, and in no time the ball is in the danger area. Reece Walsh positions himself? Lurking on the right edge, attracting Howarth, holding his position, then someway offloading to Mariner on his outside. The outside back steps inside, reaches the line, then barely stays in the field of play as he runs around to score beneath the goalposts.
A review occurs before Reynolds dabs over the goal, but the video official upholds the referee's call. Accor Stadium is erupting to the sound of jubilant Queenslanders.
2 mins: Early Infringement
2nd minute: Jensen, not Payne Haas, makes the initial carry of the night and the Storm are quick to tackle… but just three tackles later the Storm give away the first penalty of the night for Harry Grant impeding Haas on the ground. The Broncos immediately in offensive mode.
