Roughly 50 automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Automobiles, building surfaces and mailboxes were defaced, occasionally with swastikas, they stated in a release.
Officers say they were notified during the night on Wednesday, when a individual noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish liquid.
The fluid had been applied in the pattern of a banned symbol, they stated.
Officers then located multiple other marked vehicles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under legislation outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Officials report early analysis suggest the liquid was probably blood from a person.
"Currently there is no indication as to its origin; investigators are presently not cognizant of any injuries in relation with the incident," they added.
Municipal representatives said they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the public for details.
A high-ranking official stated the attack made him stunned and needed to be solved quickly.
"This event strikes at the core of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the right-wing violent incident in 2020," he stated on social media, mentioning the killing of nine individuals by a gunman targeting individuals of migrant background in 2020.
